  • Engine oil additive - Putting its worth in real world conditions

    03 Jan 2013

Engine oil additives may be supplementary in nature, but boast real world gains in terms of engine protection, efficiency and performance.

Most of us, motorists, will gladly leave the chore of servicing our rides to the people who know it better - car technicians. It may just be the local culture at play, but seldom do we get our sleeves up to fix a thing or two on our pricey mobile assets. This perhaps has a large part to owe to the sceptical mindset that cars are better left alone, leaving the skilled specialists to do their job.

Thus, many are less oblivion to the simple fixes available on the market which would be beneficial to their vehicles when used correctly. Oil additive is one example. In general, oil additives are chemical compounds which enhance the properties of the base engine lubricant. Common misconceptions of oil additives are that they boast very limited degree of improvements to the engine. Some may even mistake additives as substitutes for engine lubricants.

    Oil Additives

As the name suggests, engine oil additives are additional supplements to the base lubricants. In essence, additives boast three main functions, namely increasing viscosity; enhancing lubricity; and for contaminant control.

There is a wide array of engine oil additives and lubricants for different applications in the market
High operating temperature of the engine has a negative impact on the viscosity of engine lubricants. Broadly known as viscosity modifiers, this type of additives hampers the adverse effects by fighting the tendency of oil to become thinner at high temperatures.

Engine lubricants play a paramount role in reducing friction between components in an engine. Likewise, oil additives are engineered to further enhance this important function. More advanced agents may also come with enhanced qualities such as bonding capability, allowing them to perform better even under pressurised conditions.

The third type of oil additive is blessed with the ability to disperse contaminants. The most common contaminant found in the engine is soot, a by-product of combustion. Additives with dispersing capabilities can prevent the coagulating of soot, hence ensuring that the engine operation is free from obstructions.

Advancement of technology has made it possible for oil additives to boast more than one function. Besides, the range of products available also allows users to find one that better fits their individual requirements. With lesser friction, the engine can perform at higher efficiency, hence translating into less emission, as well as costs savings from parts replacement and fuel costs.

Most oil additives now boasts more than one function

Choosing the right type of additives for your car

The wide variety of engine oil additives in the market may confuse even the discerning motorists. While it is important to find a product which meets both mechanical and budget requirements, it is crucial that one chooses a reliable product which will bring real benefits to their cars.

Conventional additives are mostly Teflon or polymer based. These additives increase the oil fluency of the base lubricant, thus ensuring that engine components are better lubricated. However, these additives are generally less durable and more susceptible to the increase in pressure in the environment, which make them less effective.

Nano technology puts Hocen to shine

One notable mention is Hocen - a brand which adopts a breakthrough technology in making one of the leading oil additives in the market. Utilising nano technologies, Hocen engine treatment penetrates the surfaces to give better efficiency and durability.

Results have shown that the product is capable of reducing friction between engine components by as much as 98 percent. This leads to substantial improvement in the performance of the engine - more power; better fuel economy; and less wear and tear on the components. With less friction, the engines are also more refined in its operations.

A simple experiment is all it takes to tell the effectiveness of different products
Hocen oil additives does more than improving the lubricity of engine lubricants - it helps to retain viscosity of lubricants under extreme pressure. This is important as it protects the engine components under heavy loading. Moreover, by penetrating the top layer of the metal components, it helps to clean the system of any deposit build up during operation.

A good measure of the effectiveness of the lubricant is its ability to retain its lubricity and viscosity under extreme pressure. Through a simple experiment at the workshop, Hocen has managed to demonstrate both of the mentioned trait under intense pressure. More notably, the additives have outperformed the rest of the leading brands in the market currently.

Testing shows that conventional lubricant (left) gives way under high pressure, resulting in wear and tear; while Hocen (right) provides optimal lubrication even under extreme conditions

Besides engine oil additives, Hocen also manufactures a wide variety of products, spanning from engine treatments to grease and fuel conditioner. More notably, the products are known to be able to fulfil the most rigorous requirements, specifically in areas of commercial machineries.

Hocen - Product quality assurance and benefits

Besides providing better cover against wear and tear, Hocen additives can significantly reduce running costs. For instance, by enhancing the lubricity of engine lubricants, it prolongs the lifespan of them too. During testing, Hocen oil additive can boost the engine's performance by up to 7bhp. The additives can also extend the duration between each oil change for up to six times.

Quality can also be assured of Hocen's lubricants. All products have been certified by TUV - an independent product testing, inspection and certification organisation which has gained worldwide recognition.

Due to high occurrence of exposure to the human body, Hocen has also gone the extra mile to ensure its products does not cause harm to users. More importantly, the products have been tested negative for toxic, giving customers a better peace of mind.

A comprehensive test report from TUV reveals significant improvement in engine efficiency after the use of Hocen
Hocen's range of products is available through its principal manufacturer and distributor, housed within the Hocen Building located at 64 Sungei Kadut Loop. For more information of the product, please call 63653992. Alternatively, you can visit here or their facebook page.
