  • 2014 Audi A4 to go on diet; gets the e-quattro system

The 2014 Audi A4 will replace the current generation. Reports suggest that the new A4 will shed some weight and get the e-Quattro system.

Audi is replacing its current generation A4 with the new model (B9) in 2014,  which will then subsequently spawn an Avant variant in 2015.

With new model comes new things. The new generation A4 is set to get the automaker's new electric Quattro drivetrain. In terms of design, it is not expected that there will be many changes and the model will still be a baby A6.

On the other hand, the new A4 is tipped to be more flexible and lighter, according to CAR. The British magazine reports that the new A4 will shed some 100 kg over its predecessor, giving it a total weight of 1330 kg.

The model will also get Audi's plug-in hybrid system and chances are that it will also feature the e-quattro system that will ditch the current mechanical diffs and propshafts necessary for the Q models in favor of an electrically driven rear axle. It will probably get two e-motors capable of providing a combined output of 136bhp to power the rear wheels.

Conventional engine options will still be available , such as an enhanced version of the 4-cylinder 2.0-litre gasoline unit with 225bhp along with an updated version of the 2.0-litre TDI with 197bhp. Also in the pipeline, Audi is aiming to roll out a front-wheel drive plug-in hybrid in the form of the B9 PHEV which will get a 2.0-litre 226bhp gasoline engine and a 35bhp electric motor that will be installed within the transmission housing.
