  • Audi trainee projects sees an NSU Prinz getting e-tron power

Audi's trainees have fitted an NSU Prinz with an electric motor from an Audi e-tron, and given it an irresistible body to match.

Just weeks after Skoda revealed its Roadiaq student car, Audi has now revealed its own trainee-built one-off vehicle.

Called the EP4, the all-electric car you see in the photos is based on the NSU Prinz 4 that was produced in Neckarsulm by NSU Motorenwerke from 1961 to 1973.

The EP4 gets its exterior upgraded with 3D printed wheel fenders and a new Suzuka Grey and Brilliant Black finish

Powering the EP4 is a 236bhp electric motor from a 2020 Audi e-tron, resting where a two-cylinder engine once resided. This motor gets is power from the battery from the plug-in hybrid Audi Q7 (catch our review of the petrol-only Audi Q7 here). This battery sits under the front bonnet, where the NSU Prinz once kept its fuel tank.

Just like its drivetrain, the EP4 has also had its exterior completely redesigned. The recognisable links to the NSU Prinz here include the front and rear lights, while the body of the EP4 also retains the historic car's shoulder and roof lines. The muscular fenders have also been built with 3D printing technology, and allow the EP4 to wear modern performance tyres.

Audi apprentices here had to free the sheet metal from rust and finished the new body in Suzuka Grey and Brilliant Black, while utilising Signal Yellow to accent the front intakes and rear wing.

The front bonnet has also been given a large opening to allow heat to escape, while at the back, the tailgate of the EP4 can be left in a half-open position, revealing its electric drivetrain.
