The upcoming all-electric BMW iX1 is predicted to deliver an range of up to 438km, and will be available with all-wheel drive.

BMW has announced that the upcoming all-electric iX1 has already successfully completed its dynamics testing at the BMW Group's winter testing centre in Arjeplog, Sweden.

The completion of winter testing means that the launch of the iX1 is scheduled to follow immediately from the launch of the new BMW X1, which is scheduled for the third-quarter of 2022. The iX1 is also said to be based on a flexible vehicle architecture which allows it to be produced on the same assembly line as the combustion-engined and plug-in hybrid variants of the BMW X1.

No powertrain details have been revealed as yet, although BMW does state that it predicts the iX1 will boast a range of 438km, alongside an energy consumption figure of close to 5.8km/kWh, based on the car's current stage of development.

BMW further reveals that the iX1, just like the BMW iX3, will be powered by the firm's fifth-generation eDrive technology. The technology set comes complete with the latest battery cell technology and intelligently controlled heat management to enable short charging times and a long range, even in extreme sub-zero temperatures.

Unlike the iX3 however, the BMW iX1 looks set to get two electric motors (one at the front axle and one at the rear), allowing it to coordinate power between all four wheels to optimise traction and dynamic performance, and to offer assured progress over any terrain.
