  • BYD's new 'Super e-Platform' boasts 1,000kW charging support

Alongside the new EV platform - which has a 1,500V architecture - BYD also has plans to construct charging stations capable of 1,000kW of charging power.

Has a new frontier in electric vehicle (EV) development been reached yet again?

BYD has pulled the covers off its all-new 'Super e-Platform': Its latest generation EV platform, which will make its debut in its domestic market of China with the all-new Han L EV and Tang L EV.

Headlining the latest strides in technology accomplished by the Super e-Platform is the fact that it will incorporate redesigned Blade Batteries, capable of supporting DC charging at up to 1,000kW. (That's a full megawatt, or 1MW.)

The figure marks a significant leap over not just the charging speeds of existing BYD models in Singapore such as the Sealion 7 (capable of 150kW), but even the fastest charging EVs in the business already, including the Porsche Taycan (320kW) and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 (350kW).

In tandem, it's not just the tech that BYD will roll out, but the infrastructure to tap into its full capabilities. Unveiled alongside the new platform was a supercharger that can support up to 1,000kW of power, which can apparently return 400km of range to the car's batteries in just five minutes.

Plans are already in place for construction of more than 4,000 of these supercharging stations in BYD's home market of China, which will be supplemented by additional energy storage facilities in areas where there is a risk of insufficient capacity.

Unprecedented charging speeds aside, the Super e-Platform also looks set to up the performance stakes for the brand. Its new high voltage architecture - rated up to 1,500V - is powerful enough to accommodate a new electric motor with a peak power of 580kW (778bhp). Capable of spinning at up to 30,511 revolutions per minute (rpm), it is claimed by BYD to be the first motor entering mass production exceeding 30,000rpm.
