Premiums for all COE categories fell in the first bidding session of June 2024.

    CATPremiumChangeQuotaNo. of bids
    A$88,200▼  $4,500  9621,467
    B$100,607▼  $5,082

    C$70,589▼  $1,412   230334
    E$101,600▼  $3,402 183319

The first round of bidding for June saw Certificate of Entitlement (COE) premiums slipping across all categories.

Car buying interest across the last weeks seem to have stayed relatively unchanged since May 2024: While this session saw the total number of bids submitted for Cat B dropping from 1,099 in the last session to 974, the total number of bids submitted actually rose this session for Cat A and E when compared to the last.

Notable car launches that could have buoyed demand for COEs across the past two weeks include the new Nissan Serena e-POWER as well as the Cat A-friendly Tesla Model 3.

Cat A COE - Third consecutive slip

Premiums for Cat A, for cars up to 1,600cc in engine capacity and with an output of no more than 130bhp or electric vehicles with a power output of up to 110kW, took their third consecutive slip this session. This time, premiums dipped a more sizeable $4,500 (4.9%) to reach $88,200.

The current premium now stands at 3.6% below the 12-month trailing average. The total number of number of bids submitted exceeded the number of successful bids this round by 52%, lower than the 12-month average of 53% for the category.

Cat B COE - Finally taking a slip

Premiums for Cat B, for larger cars with more than 130bhp or engine displacements larger than 1,600cc or electric vehicles with a power output of more than 110kW, finally slipped this session. Premiums for the category have been climbing for the past five bidding sessions. This session saw premiums slip by $5,082 (4.8%) to reach $100,607. The total supply of bids received for the category continues to dip, this time dropping to 974 compared to the 1,099 bids received in the last session and the 1,237 bids of the session before that.

This slip takes current premiums for the category to 13.6% below the 12-month trailing average. The total number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the quota available by 42%. This is lower than the 12-month average figure for the category of 55%.

Cat C COE - Also headed downwards

Premiums for Cat C, for goods vehicles and buses, slipped this session by $1,412 (2.0%) to close at $70,589. The number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the available quota by 45%, significantly lower than the 12-month average for this category of 78%.

Cat E COE - Following suit

Premiums for Cat E, the open category, also slipped this session, falling by a total of $3,402 (3.2%) to reach $101,600.

Current premiums for the category now 14.8% below the 12-month trailing average. The total number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the quota available by 74%. This is lower than the 12-month average figure for the category of 82%
