  • Jeep Compass gets a facelift

    20 Dec 2010

Jeep has given its Compass off-roader a facelift for 2011, with a restyled front end that resembles its larger sibling, the Grand Cherokee

The Compass fits above the Patriot in the Jeep family range, and Jeep has opted to give the Compass a look that mimics the Grand Cherokee, in the same way that the facelifted Patriot looks similar to the Cherokee model.

The headlamps and grille on the Compass are new, and look to be lifted straight from the new Grand Cherokee, while the front fenders and bonnet have also been redesigned to suit. There is also additional body cladding and new roof rails.

At the rear, the facelifted Compass has new LED tail lights, a body-coloured rear spoiler, and additional trim. There are also newly-designed 17-inch aluminium wheels, upgradable to 18-inch aluminium or chrome wheels for the Limited trim level.

Inside, the Compass gets an interior that's similar to the Patriot, with better quality materials throughout. Features include soft touch front-door trim panels with a padded upper surface, a new centre armrest and a three-spoke Jeep steering wheel with integrated controls for the radio, cruise control, available hands-free phone and other vehicle functions.

The Compass comes with a choice of two engines. The first is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol that produces 158bhp and 191Nm of torque, and comes with either a continuously variable transmission (CVT2) or a five-speed manual gearbox. The other engine is a 2.4-litre unit, which has 172bhp and 223Nm of torque, and is also available with a continuously variable transmission (CVT2) or a five-speed manual gearbox.

The Compass is front-wheel-drive as standard, but there is also the option of choosing Freedom Drive I with full-time, active four-wheel-drive system with lock mode, or the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package that comes with a four-wheel-drive system and a second-generation continuously variable transaxle with low range gearing (CVT2L). Jeep has also retuned the Compass' suspension, with higher spring and damping rates, added rebound springs, and an increased diameter of the rear sway bar.
