The five-door version of the new Europe-only Kia cee’d made its debut last week at the Geneva Motor Show, but the Korean automaker is reportedly saving a 3-door variant of the model until later in the year. To drum up excitement for the model to be released later this year, Kia has just released a single teaser image of it.
As is often the case with teasers, the image released by Kia shows a car whose lines have been exaggerated in order to make it look like it is fresh off of the drawing board. The car has no door handles and the wheels are massive, two traits typically found on concepts that will evidently not be found on the production car.
A look past the blown-up lines and the concept-like design cues gives a very accurate idea of what the three-door cee’d will look like. It is exactly what one would expect, and there are not very many aesthetic differences between the five-door and the three-door models. There shouldn’t be many technical differences between the two cars, either. The cee’d coupe is expected to be offered with roughly the same engines as its five-door sibling.
The gasoline-powered range will start with 99 hp 1.4-litre unit, and gradually climb up to a 128 hp 1.6-litre. For diesel fans, a 1.6-litre turbodiesel rated at 128 hp will be on the menu. It is worth noting that Hyundai’s new downsized 1.2-liter gasoline engine could eventually find its way to the cee’d lineup.
Look for the three-door cee’d to bow at the Paris Motor Show that will open its doors next fall. When it hits showrooms in early 2013, it will fight against class heavyweights such as the Renault Mégane, the Opel Astra, and last but certainly not least the seventh generation of the Volkswagen Golf.
