  • Land Rover introduces 2011 Range Rover with a new bigger diesel engine

"The bigger the better" seems to be the key for Tata controlled Land Rover. It has only been a year since the company last updated its flagship Range Rover, but here comes the new version that too with a bigger eight cylinder engine.

The new 4.4-litre V8 twin turbo diesel engine replaces the earlier 3.6 L diesel engine. Considering that it was only a model year chains, introducing a new engine is a little strange but a welcome move among diehard Rover fans.

Apart from the engine and a new transmission system, rest of the changes are minor cosmetic changes in the interior and exterior of the SUV. Given the iconic stature of the model, there was little scope for major changes to be implemented. The engine uses parallel sequential turbocharging technology and generates 309 bhp of power at 3,750 rpm and 516 lb/ft of torque at 2,000 rpm.

Despite the higher displacement, the Euro V engine will be able to reduce carbon emissions to 253 g/km from the earlier figure of 294 g/km. In addition, the fuel efficiency is set to increase 18.5 per cent to 30.1 mpg from the current 25.4 mpg, marking the first time for the vehicle above 30 mpg. With the next replacement due in the third quarter of 2012, there are high chances that the fuel efficiency will further increase to 40 mpg aided by some innovative weight cutting exercises.

Performance wise, the 40-year-old war horse is still going strong. With the bigger engine, Land Rover has shaved 1.1 seconds in clocking zero to 60 mph. The new engine has been complemented with a new eight speed automatic transmission replacing the earlier six speed manual transmission.

The action packed 2011 Range Rovers, equipped with LED headlamps, goes on sale in September in the UK.
