In a bid to curb illegal parking, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is widening its use of Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTVs), in an additional 30 locations islandwide.

The 30 locations are selected based on a number of considerations including:

• a high incidence of illegal parking throughout the day,
• the illegal parking situation hinders the smooth flow of public buses, or
• the illegal parking activities raises safety concerns for pedestrians and road users and leads to prolonged traffic congestion.

This is part of LTA's efforts to utilise technology to optimise resources needed for parking enforcement, on top of improving traffic flow. The positive trial results are part of the reason for LTA to increase the deployment of CCTVs.

Speaking to The Business Times, an LTA spokesman commented that the average number of summons issued went from 400 to 1,300 after CCTVs were installed in front of Golden Mile Complex at Beach Road. Another location is Marine Parade Central in front of Parkway Parade Shopping Centre where CCTVs have effectively proven in detecting and deterring illegal parking on top of improved traffic conditions. 

The added CCTVs will commence operations progressively from the second quarter of this year, and is due for completion by 2014. The CCTVs will be operating round the clock and prominent signages warning motorists not to park in monitored areas will be put up. Illegal parking in monitored areas carries a maximum fine of up to $300 and carries 3 demerit points.
