After a series of accidents at the infamous Victoria Street Junction, one which claimed three lives, LTA will implement an additional precautionary measure to improve road safety. After consulting many feedbacks and suggestions from the public with LTA’s own traffic engineers have carefully looked at them, LTA has brought forward the installation of overhead traffic lights at the junction earlier from the planned timeframe of 2013.
Installation works have already started and operations are expected to start next week. A drawback will be narrower pedestrian walkways until the road bordering the area is restored, after the construction of the Downtown Line (Stage 1) is completed by the middle of 2013.
The installation of the lights is in addition to synchronising the traffic lights at Victoria Street junction with another pair at the pedestrian crossing between Bugis Village and Bugis Junction as an enhanced safety feature.
LTA urges the cooperation of motorists and urges all for the need to drive within a safe speed limit, not to drink and drive, and not beat the traffic lights, for the safety of all road users.
