  • McLaren W1 triumphs in sub-zero testing

The W1 had its chassis and systems optimised to harness its power in Baltic conditions, with everything from its engine to its battery stress-tested.

Earlier in 2025, the McLaren W1 concluded the cold weather stages of its exhaustive test and validation programme, proving its key vehicle systems and capabilities in sub-zero conditions.

According to McLaren's lead test driver, Dani Marcos, the W1 had its chassis and systems optimised to harness its power in Arctic conditions. "We're talking about a car with 1,258bhp and 1,340Nm of torque, so to give traction in low-grip conditions is a big challenge."

As McLaren's Chief Engineer, Andy Beale, explains, the "short days and long test times" are ultimately the biggest challenge of winter testing, but "proving the performance and calibrating for these conditions is an important part of McLaren's testing."

Marcos further adds on that the team pushed to get the best performance from its torque-vectoring systems, as well as traction control, stability control, and ABS brake systems.

Everything from the McLaren W1's V8 engine and gearbox to its hybrid battery and electric motor was stress-tested in the sub-zero conditions. Even the effect of compacted snow and ice on the cooling system's vents was rigorously checked.

McLaren's Chief Engineer, Andy Beale, stressed that completing this testing gives them the greatest bandwidth of the car.
