Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew reaffirms that the new bus service reliability scheme will not encourage dangerous driving behaviour among bus drivers.

Mr. Lui was responding to questions posed in Parliament with regards to the safety aspects of the new scheme. He said the new reliability framework is modelled after the carrot-and-stick scheme in London, and research on the system has proven that the additional stress on drivers is manageable and not significant.

The Transport Minister added that both SMRT and SBS Transit have been meeting the safety standard, set by the Public Transport Council, of less than 0.75 accidents per 100,000km travelled.

He also explained that the system will place greater pressure on planning staffs who have to make decisions on bus allocations and if additional buses should be inserted to boost the frequency of the service. He reassures that considerations have been made for a system that is fair to all parties concerned.
