  • Sebastian Loeb wins Rally Mexico

Sebastian Loeb has won the Rally Guanajuato Mexico in the World Rally Championship, his fifth straight win at the event and the first victory for Citroen this season

Citroen dominated the proceedings from the start of the rally, but it was Loeb's teammate, Sebastian Ogier, who led the early stages. The two Frenchmen swapped the leadership throughout the event, but Ogier went off the road early on the last day to retire and hand the win to Loeb. It was Loeb's fifth straight victory at the Rally Mexico event, and his 63rd overall rally win in his career. It was also his and Citroen's first victory for the 2011 WRC season, in Citroen's new DS3 WRC World Rally Car.

"That was a very hard weekend, a terrible fight with Ogier until today," said Loeb. "He was really, really pushing hard. I think we've done nearly a perfect weekend, some small troubles but not many for a new car. I'm satisfied with the performance - the DS3 is very fast."

Ogier expressed his disappointment at crashing out. "I had to push to hold on to my first place as my position of being first out forced me to sweep the roads yet again," explained the Citroën Total World Rally Team driver. "In a corner, the car understeered and I went a bit wide. I couldn't avoid a stone on the verge and the left-hand front upright broke. I gambled and I lost, but above all I'm feeling gutted for the whole team. We'd done a great job since the start of the weekend and I didn't manage to make it pay off by scoring precious points for Citroën."

Ogier's retirement meant that Citroen's rivals Ford scored second and third place in Mexico, with Finns Mirko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala piloting their Ford Fiesta RS WRC rally cars to the podium positions. Hirvonen's second place means that he retains his lead in the Championship standings, following his victory in the season opening Rally Sweden.
