  • Toyota Camry unveiled

Toyota has finally announced the all-new seventh-generation 2012 Camry, which will go on sale by the end of this year

The new Camry is more powerful, yet delivers better fuel efficiency, and the car has a more upscale interior with higher quality materials, while the styling is sharper than the outgoing model. Toyota also claims reduced costs for the new Camry versus the old model.

In America, the new Camry will be offered with a choice of three powertrains. The first is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that produces 178bhp and 230Nm of torque, while the second unit is a 3.5-litre V6 with 268bhp and 336Nm of torque. Both engines are available with a six-speed automatic transmission that with a sequential manual shift mode.

The last variant is the Camry Hybrid, which uses a revised version of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system, as well as a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder Atkinson engine that replaces the existing 2.4-litre unit. Together, the petrol and electric engines produces 200bhp, which puts it right in between the 2.5-litre and 3.5-litre versions of the Camry.

Toyota claims that the new Camry Hybrid features optimised aerodynamics and reduced weight, which contribute to improved fuel economy. There is also a new EV Drive mode on the new Camry Hybrid, which allows the car to be driven in purely electric mode for up to 1km at speeds below 40km/h. The Camry Hybrid is differentiated from the standard Camry models via the blue-hued Toyota logos and the model-specific alloy wheels and lower grille, as well as exclusive trim and upholsteries, and a three-dial Optitron gauge panel.

Although the new Camry is similar in size to the outgoing version, Toyota says that thanks to measures such as moving the accelerator pedal and front seats forward, repositioning the rear-seat hip point rearward, and reshaping the front seatbacks, rear-knee room and rear middle seat legroom has been increased. The new Camry is also said to be quieter throughout the cabin.

The new Camry has a more rigid body structure, revised front suspension and redesigned rear suspension, while it's also the first Toyota to feature the firm's latest electric power steering (EPS) control system. Toyota says that these features give the new Camry "greater straight-line stability and crisper steering response, while also enhancing overall ride comfort".
