The move comes after Volvo removed the V70 estate from the American market last year, and the Swedish carmaker cites declining sales of the ageing models as the reason for withdrawing them from the U.S., with S40 sales going down by 29 per cent in 2010, and V50 sales declining by almost 50 per cent in the same period.
"It seemed American buyers weren't looking for that kind of product and for us as a car company, it's not profitable to sell something that has a declining market share”, Volvo spokesperson Dan Johnston said.
Volvo will now concentrate on its remaining products on sale in the U.S., namely the C30 hatchback, C70 coupe-cabriolet, S60 sedan, S80 sedan, XC60 SUV, XC70 crossover and the XC90 SUV. The XC70 is the only station wagon that remains in Volvo’s American line-up following the withdrawal of the V50.
