BMW has unveiled the new BMW M2 with M xDrive.

That's right. Your favourite performance coupe is now available with all-wheel drive, said to give it improved traction, faster acceleration, and improved agility and directional stability.

The BMW M2 with M xDrive is able to dispatch the century sprint in just 3.7 seconds

The M xDrive all-wheel drive system makes use of an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case to allow fully variable division of the engine's power between the front and rear wheels. BMW adds, however, that the system will deliver a rear-wheel bias fitting of a BMW and only sent to the front wheels when those at the rear cannot be fed any more power. Power is additionally sent exclusively to the rear wheels during normal driving.

This M xDrive system is linked to BMW's Active M Differential, allowing the car's responses to be precisely adapted to the road and driving situation. 

Some numbers are warranted here. BMW states that the new all-wheel drive system means this M2 with M xDrive will now complete the century sprint in just 3.7 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the pure rear-wheel drive variant (when fitted with the M Steptronic transmission that is). You might want to note however, that this M2 with M xDrive's sprint time when recorded with the benefit of the one-foot rollout (now becoming the new standard and also utilised for the sprint time of the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe) is 3.4 seconds. This BMW M2 with M xDrive continues to develop a total of 473bhp.

The 3.0-litre engine under the bonnet also now makes use of a new pre-chamber combustion process

Drivers will also be able to adapt the car’s performance attributes of the all-wheel drive system via the car's M Setup menu. And for those still doubtful: You'll still be able to send power exclusively to the rear wheels via a 2WD drive mode with DSC deactivated.

Under the bonnet, BMW's 3.0-litre straight-six engine now comes with BMW M Ignite technology, a new pre-chamber combustion process. This technology is said to reduce fuel consumption under high loads while allowing the BMW M2 to meet the emissions requirements of the EU7 standard. If you're wondering, this technology will also make its way into the BMW M lineup that makes use of this 3.0-litre straight-six come mid-2026.
