  • Mazda CX-80 previewed at Mandala Club

The Mazda CX-80 is the brand's new flagship in Singapore, and it's also the first one with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Family men and women in the market for a new ride now have the Mazda CX-80 to consider. The seven-seater SUV is part of the carmaker's Large Product Group and is the brand's flagship model in Singapore. It is also the first Mazda sold here with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

In addition, the CX-80 is the largest Mazda model currently available here, measuring 4,995mm long, 1,890mm wide, and a wheelbase length of 3,120mm. Mazda says this enables the last row of seats to accommodate occupants up to 1.6m tall.

The CX-80 has plenty of tech, but designers ensure that it is not 'in your face'

Inside, customers will find a well-crafted cockpit with soft-touch surfaces. Facing the driver are a 12.3-inch Digital Instrument Display and heads-up display, which the brand refers to as 'Active Driving Display'. Mazda Connect, the infotainment system, is shown on a 12.3-inch screen as well. Wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto are standard.

Families with more than one driver will appreciate the Driver Personalisation System, which uses the driver's face to store the saved seat position as a profile. The system can store up to six profiles, and these are automatically recalled when the door is closed.

The Driver Personalisation System uses a camera to store and unlock the saved profiles

Additionally, the Driver Personalisation System can also adjust the seat to an optimal eye position based on the height entered by the driver. Entry Assist, which moves the seat back and steering column upwards for easier ingress/egress, is also controlled by this feature.

Other comfort/convenience features include wireless charging, USB-C ports, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and three-zone climate control. The rearmost passengers also get a pair of air vents to help them stay cool.

There's plenty of room for passengers in the second row and Mazda says the third-row seats can accommodate occupants up to 1.6m tall

The CX-80's plug-in hybrid powertrain is comprised of a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder producing 189bhp and 261Nm of torque. Paired to it is an electric motor capable of 129kW (173bhp) and 270Nm of torque, which is in turn fed by a 17.8kWh battery.

As the engine and electric motor produce peak power at different points, it is incorrect to simply add all these figures up. That said, the powertrain's combined output is 323bhp and 500Nm of torque. With an eight-speed automatic driving all four wheels, the CX-80 does the century sprint in 6.8 seconds, making it as quick as an MX-5 RF with a six-speed manual.

With a plug-in hybrid powertrain, the CX-80 also offers an EV mode alongside Sport, Normal, and Off-Road

As a plug-in hybrid, the CX-80 offers a combined fuel consumption of 62.5km/L. With the battery fully charged and under ideal driving conditions, the SUV offers a pure electric range of 60km (Japan WLTP).

The CX-80 will be officially unveiled at the Singapore Motor Show in January 2025. Though officially listed for $376,888, Mazda is currently retailing the model at a pre-launch price of $328,888.
