British Hainan is a quaint, family run restaurant that is nestled in the Joo Chiat enclave, and is located at the junction of Crane Road and Carpmael Road. The founder's father, Mr. Phua Senior, was formerly a chef for the British during Singapore's colonial era.

Mr. Phua Senior familiarised himself deeply with many of these Hainanese-Western style dishes he prepared during his days cooking for the British, and these experiences were passed on to his son, Fred Phua, who went on to open British Hainan, as he wanted to share with other Singaporeans the same Hainanese-Western fare that he grew up on.

British Hainan is perhaps best known for having one of Singapore's best renditions of Ox Tail Stew, which has been personally prepared to exacting standards by Fred Phua, where seven hours are spent everyday just on preparation for this single dish.
