  • The Audi RS Q e-tron undergoes testing for the Dakar rally

Audi intends to be the first car manufacturer to use an electrified drivetrain to win against its combustion engine counterparts.

Barely a year after the initial concept proposal was released, Audi Sport has started testing prototypes of the Audi RS Q e-tron. With this unique vehicle, Audi will take on one of the greatest challenges there is in international racing - the Dakar Rally, scheduled for January 2022.

Audi intends to be the first automaker to use an electrified drivetrain, in combination with an energy converter, to win against its conventionally-powered competitors in the world's toughest rally event.

Audi's engineers have adapted the RS Q e-tron's electric drivetrain to deal with the unforgiving desert environment
The characteristics of the Dakar Rally present Audi's engineers with formidable challenges. Daily stages can measure up to an astounding 800km in length, and charging opportunities in the desert are far and few in between. Audi has therefore chosen an innovative charging concept: Onboard, a highly efficient TFSI engine replenishes the high-voltage battery while driving.

The drivetrain of the Audi RS Q e-tron is electric. The front and rear axles are both fitted with a motor-generator unit from the current Audi FE07 Formula E car.

Of note on the RS Q e-tron is its power distribution software. Because its front and rear axles are not mechanically connected, as is common in electric vehicles, Audi's proprietary software can take over the torque distribution between the axles, creating a virtual and freely configurable centre differential which saves weight.

The first prototype of the Audi RS Q e-tron has had its first shakedown in Neuburg at the beginning of July 2021. An intensive test programme is on the agenda until the start of 2022.
