Train operator SMRT said in a statement that the train fault on Wednesday night was caused by a train captain who bypassed a signal point without authorisation.
The action caused a 'trackside fault' that resulted in service disruption between Tanah Merah and Pasir Ris. SMRT engineers were dispatched to rectify the problem immediately, and service was resumed at 11:19pm.
Around 180 passengers were re-routed to Simei station, with another 200 to Expo station. Free bus bridging services were available to transport the affected passengers.
SMRT added that the two trains were re-routed to Simei and Expo due to safety concerns, and that investigations are underway.
