  • Updated Android Auto to control more in-car features

The next version of Google's Android Auto app could see the operating system capable of controlling more in-car features, from infotainment to air-conditioning.

At Google's I/O 2016 conference, the technology giant revealed new features for its Android Auto app, which offers greater control of in-car features from within the app.

Working with mobile technology company Qualcomm on the joint project using a Maserati Ghibli as its test car, the updated Android Auto will let drivers control standard features such as sat-nav, music and Bluetooth. However, it will also be able to operate new areas of vehicle functionality, including air-conditioning, heated seats, electric windows and even door locks. New features for Android Auto will also include the 'OK Google' personal assistant service, Wi-Fi support and real-time navigation information.

At its keynote event, Google also revealed that those who don't have Android Auto compatible cars will soon be able to enjoy the same features as the ones with Android Auto compatible cars, as the updated app will let users access Android Auto via the smartphone itself. To use the feature, all they would need to do is connect their smartphone with the vehicle's infotainment system using either a 3.5mm auxilliary jack or Bluetooth wireless connectivity. With this, drivers will be able to make and receive voice calls, access messages as well as music and navigation features.
