  • Volvo has produced its last diesel-powered vehicle

With the production of a diesel-powered V60 and XC90, Volvo bids farewell to its production of diesel cars.

Volvo Cars marks a huge milestone in its 97-year history, as its last diesel car rolls out of its factories.

As the last diesel-powered V60 rolled out of Volvo's plant in Ghent, Belgium and the last diesel-powered XC90 is completed at Torslanda, Sweden, Volvo is taking a huge step into becoming not only a fully electric car maker, but also achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

The end of Volvo's diesel era was marked by the final diesel XC90 rolling out of its Swedish factory

Over the years, diesel played a significant role in Volvo's evolution into a premium brand. For example, the launch of the V60 D6 plug-in hybrid in 2012 marked the world's first plug-in hybrid fitted with a diesel engine. However, in recent years, the electric revolution was quicker than expected.

In the last year, Volvo's sales of fully electric cars increased by 70%. Beyond that, its global electric market share has also increased by 34%. With these figures, it is clear that the world is headed in an all electric direction.

While it is evident that the future is electric, Volvo still offers plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid models. This helps customers ease into the all electric future. The firm offers a range of electric vehicles which include the EX30 and the EC40.
