  • Volvo unveils new XC70, its first long-range plug-in hybrid

The new XC70 SUV offers a combined CLTC range of over 1,200km and with its fast charging technology, can see its battery go from 0-80% in just 23 minutes.

Following earlier teasers, Volvo has finally pulled the covers off the XC70 SUV.

Before you get confused - no, this isn't the successor to its jacked up wagon from the 2000s to 2010s, but rather, an all-new model that marks the brand's first long-range plug-in hybrid, offering an all-electric CLTC driving range of over 200km, and thanks to its combustion engine, a combined driving range of over 1,200km.

The XC70's large wheels, high ground clearance, and all-wheel drive capability allow it to take on more challenging road conditions

Built on Volvo's new Scalable Modular Architecture platform and equipped with fast charging technology, the onboard high-voltage battery of the new XC70 can charge from 0-80% in just 23 minutes. In addition, its bi-directional charging capacity makes it possible to use said battery as a power bank for other electric devices.

Reflecting a modern take on Volvo's Scandinavian heritage, the XC70's exterior features sculpted lines running from front to back, a gently tapered roof, and defined shoulders. At its front, a shield-like closed grille is paired with an active grille shutter to optimise aerodynamics and extend its driving range.

Inside, the XC70's spacious cabin offers smart storage features and an infotainment system with an AI-powered voice assistant. It also comes with a 12.3-inch driver display and a large free-standing 15.4-inch horizontal centre display.

The XC70's spacious cabin is described as featuring a clean, timeless Scandinavian design and high-quality materials

Many of its functions - such as pre-conditioning of the cabin - can be remotely controlled using the Volvo Cars app. And with over-the-air updates, Volvo promises that the XC70 will stay up to date with the latest software.

Volvo is renowned for its safety features, and the XC70 is equipped with Safe Space Technology, and described as being designed with the occupants' safety in mind. With advanced sensing technology, including radars, cameras, and sensors, the XC70 can continuously monitor its surroundings and support the driver to help avoid or mitigate collisions when needed. It also comes with safety features tailored to busy urban environments, like its door opening alert.

Volvo has said that production of its new XC70 SUV is already underway, although the brand has yet to officially release any details about the new car's powertrain. It is currently available for pre-order in China, with plans to bring it to Europe at a later stage.
