The Volvo XC90 now adopts design touches found on the firm's electric models alongside a revised cabin and infotainment system.

Volvo has given its XC90 SUV a significant update.

The premium seven-seater now sports a new exterior, intended to keep it in line with the firm's new electrified models including the EX30 and EX90. Redesigned here are the SUV's Thor Hammer head lights and taillights, while up front, the car's grille now gets new diagonal elements.

The Volvo XC90 now has a new grille and head lights, while its taillights have also been redesigned

But in the cabin is where more significant changes have been made. The Volvo XC90 now gets a larger, 11.2-inch free-standing central infotainment screen, which is said to offer a 21% increased pixel density so it can deliver an even crisper display. This unit will now display the most commonly used apps on its home screen, while plug-in hybrid owners will also be able to set the car into its 'Pure' all-electric drive mode from here.

The dashboard of the Volvo XC90 has also been revised so it gets a more horizontal shape, and now gets decorative panels made from recycled materials. The ambient lighting system has also been revised to offer enhanced illumination, while the car's centre console also now offers an additional cupholder and a wireless phone charger separate from the main storage area.

Under all this, Volvo states that the suspension system of the XC90 has also received new dampers, each with the ability to adapt mechanically to road conditions to give the car a more confident and relaxed drive.

The SUV has received a revised suspension and added noise insulation, while its cabin now gets a new, 11.2-inch infotainment system

Air suspension is offered as an added option, bundled together with an active chassis system that can monitor the road and driver to deliver the most comfortable ride possible. The system will also alter the ride height of the vehicle to deliver more aerodynamic efficiency when driving at speed, or to offer more clearance when driving over rough surfaces.

The SUV lineup is being led by the T8 plug-in hybrid which makes use of a 306bhp four-cylinder petrol engine and a 14.7kWh battery. This drivetrain will give the Volvo XC90 an electric-only range of more than 70km. Two mild hybrids drivetrains will also be offered, both making use of petrol four-cylinder engines. The range starts with the 247bhp 'B5' variant, while the 'B6' will offer a total output of 296bhp.

Production of the new Volvo XC90 and first customer deliveries are scheduled to start by late 2024.
