  • New Saab 9-5 revealed

Pictures of the long awaited Saab 9-5 replacement, which is due to be officially launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show, has been leaked to the press

The new car features distinctive styling with a bold new front end and a sleek profile. Some interesting touches include the black A-pillars and the dark trim above the windows. The sloping C-pillars give it an almost coupe-like profile while the clear LED taillights add to the dramatic effect.

Inside, the 9-5 is typical Saab, with the driver-orientated cliff like fascia and the trademark ignition point on the centre console. Other interior styling touches include glossy black trim, aggressively bolstered seats, and a thick-rimmed steering wheel. Optional items that can be specced include a rear seat entertainment system, bi-xenon headlights, a Harman Kardon audio system, keyless entry, and a large 8-inch navigation system from Panasonic.

The new 9-5 is based on a modified version of GM's Epsilon II platform, tuned towards sportiness. With a wheelbase measuring 2840mm, there should be plenty of cabin space for passengers. A 513 litre boot will also ensure sufficient cargo room for equipment.

Several engines will be offered, including three turbocharged petrol units, a base 1.6 litre four cylinder producing 160bhp, a 2.0 litre four cylinder with 210bhp, and a top of the range 2.8 litre V6 producing 300bhp. Two diesel engines are also available, both 2.0 litre units producing either 160bhp or 190bhp. Future developments could include a petrol-hybrid version, as well as one that runs on biofuel.

The Saab 9-5 is expected to go on sale in Europe by April 2010.
