SP Group (SP) has today announced its plans to build Singapore's largest public Electric Vehicle (EV) charging network, in its bid to accelerate EV adoption in Singapore. By 2020, SP will build 500 charging points islandwide, located at shopping malls, residential areas, business parks and industrial sites, accessible by all members of the public. These charging points will also be compatible with all EV models. The first batch of 30 charging points will be in operation by the end of 2018.

SP has also announced the launch of two tenders for the EV charging network - one for the procurement of charging hardware for both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) chargers, and the other for the installation of the chargers. 

Due to its highly urbanised and compact nature, Singapore is considered an ideal environment for EVs. By building a pervasive charging network, SP aims to plug a critical gap in scaling up EV adoption in Singapore, by reducing range anxiety for drivers.

The islandwide network will be fully compliant with Singapore's national charging standards and comprise both AC and DC chargers, with power ratings ranging from 22kW to 50kW. Of the 500 charging points, more than 100 will be 50kW DC charging points, allowing for fast-charge capability that can fully charge an EV in as little as 30 minutes. 

SP's drive to increase the overall adoption of EVs in Singapore is motivated by the significant benefits it can offer. EVs offer drivers lower operating costs in terms of running costs and maintenance, while also being a cleaner ride thanks to zero tailpipe emissions. Additionally, SP estimates that each EV is able to halve the carbon emissions from a comparable internal combustional engine vehicle after factoring in Signapore's power generation profile. Finally, quieter EVs also help to reduce noise pollution in a dense city like Singapore.

To make the charging network accessible and convenient to use, SP is developing a mobile app that will allow users to locate available charging points, to receive automated updates about the charging status of their vehicle, as well as to make payment electronically.
